I first got to meet Ray as a young logistics intern with the US Army, Communications Security Logistics Activity, Fort Huachuca, Arizona in 1988. He was up front, straight-forward, and always cared for those that worked behind the logistics scenes. As a former Marine, he would joke about Jarheads, but one TDY trip to the Pentagon (Ray promised me not to tell anybody), Ray picked me up at “Zero Dark Thirty”, and told me to bring my camera--he surprised me by driving right up to the Iwo Jima Memorial! “Young Man, take as many pictures as you want!” I will certainly remember Ray and my Sincere Condolences go out to the Willis Family.
Peace be with you,
Respectfully,
Art Chavira

Ray Willis was and is an honest to God American hero. We worked together on the Army Staff, 1987-1989. All his efforts were aimed at putting the best possible tools in the hands of our soldiers. He shared some of his experiences over coffee...never a Coca-Cola! He served in the Dominican Republic where his dedication to doing the right thing cost him his opportunity to command a prestigous Division Signal Battlaion, because a LTG felt Ray, as a new 2nd LT, had made the COL look bad 16 years earlier. He did have a knack for keeping seniors honest. He shared that when he was in harms way on some of his tours in Viet Nam, he could not hold a coffee cup still for 3 days after getting back to safety. Much more. It was an honor to know him. I will miss him. BJ, USMA 70

To the Willis Family:
I worked with Ray for many years on Army Communications Security equipment issues. I've always respected his and thought highly of him (even when he was being cantankerous) because he put the Warfighter first. He was a great American. I will keep him alive in my and other's memories with the many "war stories" of him. God Bless You. I
