OBITUARY
Glenn B. Willis, Jr., of Beaufort, died Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at home. Mr. Willis was born September 25, 1925, in Norfolk, VA. His parents were Glenn B. Willis, Sr. and Blanche Meekins Willis. He was the third of five children. Glenn had four siblings. He was preceded in death by Eileen W. Hill, John W. Willis, and Lewis P. Willis. His surviving sister, Pauline W. Willis, lives in Beaufort, NC.
He married Verta Willis of Williston and was the father of two children: Susan C. Willis of Beaufort and Dianne W. Phillips, married to Jack Phillips of Morehead City. He had four grandchildren: Leigh Cox Long of Beaufort, Willis Jackson Phillips married to Christy Irvin Phillips of New York, NY, Allison Carlisle Cox of Beaufort, and Jenny Phillips Toney married to Charles Leftridge Toney of Charlotte, NC, all of which affectionately called him "Boom-Pa."
Glenn enlisted in the Navy at the age of seventeen and served under Fleet Admiral, William F. Halsey, Jr., in the Pacific during World War II, aboard the Destroyer U.S.S. English.
After the war, Glenn returned home and graduated from Beaufort High School in May of 1947. He then attended college at Wake Forest College and was later employed at the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, NC, where he worked for thirty-three years. After retiring from Cherry Point in January of 1984, Glenn began working at Parker GMC in March of that same year. He then enjoyed his second career, as a salesman serving the people of Carteret County for twenty-five years.
During the course of his life, Glenn attended Ann Street United Methodist Church and was an active member of the Jaycee's of Beaufort and the V.F.W. In the 1960's, Glenn served his community as a Beaufort Town Commissioner.
Glenn always enjoyed sports and was especially fond of sailing, but anyone who knew Glenn well, knew that his main hobby was his family.
He and his wife, Verta, were married for fifty-nine years. Together they enjoyed traveling, spending time with their family and friends, and enjoying life. Glenn was a loving, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, along with being a good son and brother!
SERVICES
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 5, 2010, at Ann Street United Methodist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Eric N. Lindblade, Jr. and the associate pastor, the Rev. Dr. Anne Walker Sims, officiating. The committal service with military honors will follow at Ocean View Cemetery.
