OBITUARY
Nicholas "Nick" James Galantis, 93, of Morehead City, died Saturday, June 5, 2010, at Harborview Health Care Center.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 10, at First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Father Matthew Carter, priest of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Wilmington, officiating. The committal service with military honors will follow at Bayview Cemetery.
Nick was born on the island of Symi, Dodecanesos in Greece. As a teenager, he immigrated with his family to Campbell, Ohio. He joined the United States Army in 1942 during World War II. His service in the Army brought him to Morehead City where he met his future wife, Jennie Memakis. After serving two years in the Palau Islands of the Pacific, he was discharged and returned to Morehead City. He married Jennie Memakis and became a partner with his father-in-law, John Memakis, in the Busy Bee Restaurant.
From 1967, for nearly 30 consecutive years, Nick served the community of Morehead City on the Town Council holding the following offices: Police Commissioner, Fire Commissioner, Street/Sanitation Commissioner, Recreation Commissioner, Mayor Pro Tem, and Mayor. He was a member of the following civic organizations: Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge, Chamber of Commerce, American Legion and a life long member of the Jaycees. He served as president of the West Carteret High School Booster Club and was inducted into the WCHS Hall of Fame in 2004.
His selfless acts and devotion to his community were acknowledged by numerous local, state, and out-of-state awards. A few of the many were: Outstanding Citizen Award in 1970 voted by the Carteret unit of the NCEA, member of the elite Order of the Long Leaf Pine presented by NC Gov. James Holshouser, Jr., a VFW citation praising him for services rendered to the community, and many plaques in appreciation for his support, one proclaiming him "Soldier, Patriot, Civic Leader and Friend".
In appreciation of his accomplishments, Galantis Drive, location of the Leon Mann Senior Citizen's Center and Symi Circle in the medical professional park are two streets named after him. Honored at a reception in July of 1996 at the Morehead City Town Hall for his 30 years of dedicated service, a letter was read from Gov. Jim Hunt naming him "Mr. Morehead City". Even dearer to his heart than the awards he received is the affection of the people who still comment after so many years how he helped them or their friends and relatives in their time of need.
