Funeral Services

A funeral service is what most people think of when they hear the word funeral – typically the decedent is embalmed, dressed, placed in a casket and there may be a viewing/visitation followed by a funeral ceremony and burial in a cemetery. If you are considering a funeral service, know that we offer many options from time honored traditional services, to non-traditional location services and even burial at sea.

At the time of death, a licensed funeral director will meet with you at our funeral home, or in the comfort of your home, depending on the family’s needs and location. The funeral director will go over available options and have you sign the necessary authorizations. Based on the services chosen, our staff will take care of all paperwork, preparations for the service, overseeing the service, obituary placement, and a variety of other tasks.

Some things to know or consider with a funeral

Unlike cremation, there is typically no required waiting period before embalming or burying someone. However, required tasks such as digging the grave, scheduling the officiant, etc… do require coordination and time.

Embalming – except in certain cases, is not required by law. Embalming may be necessary if you select certain funeral arrangements such as a public viewing.

Caskets – Many options exist but typically you have a choice between Wood Caskets and Metal Caskets.

Outer Burial Container – what the casket is placed in and offers protection to the casket and gravesite. Typically there are two types of OBC - grave liners and vaults - and many options exist for the various types.

  • Grave Liner – typically made of a strong plastic or concrete. Allows for natural elements to get in, but protects the grave from collapsing.
  • Vault – typically made from very strong concrete and lined with plastic/metal and seals. Vaults do not allow for natural elements to get in offering more protection for the casket and protects the grave from collapsing.

Earth Burial – There are very few NC laws regarding earth burial, however, cemeteries are allowed to set their own rules/regulations regarding burial on their property.

  • Some cemeteries allow for the casket to be placed directly into the ground while others require the casket be placed in an outer burial container (grave liner/vault).
  • Most cemeteries allow for the committal service to take place at the actual grave site, but some require all committal services to take place at specific non graveside location in the cemetery.
  • NOEFS interment fee (opening and closing the grave) is $650.00, however some cemeteries require their staff to open/close the grave and charge a higher price – we must charge you what their interment fee is.
  • Most municipal owned cemeteries charge a burial permit fee.
  • Cemeteries can control the dates/times burials take place and they may charge more for burials taking place in the evening or on weekends.
